‘Psych’-ed for Season 7 - Février

Tous les deux parlent de la saison 7 et de ce a quoi peut s'attendre, ainsi que de leurs vie à l'exterieur de Psych

by Craig Tomashoff

It’s time to get Psych-ed again. The USA Network’s long-running series, about crime-solving fake psychic Sean Spencer (James Roday) and fellow investigator Gus Guster (Dule Hill), has returned for a seventh season. Roday and Spencer talked to XfinityTV.com about everything from a special 100th episode tribute to a board game to a surprise wedding to their unfortunate encounter with a future Hall Of Famer.

Your characters seem so close on the show, it’s like you’re an old, married couple. Does that chemistry extend into real life?
Dule: We’re like an old, married couple except we don’t argue quite as frequently.
James: It’s a lot of fun to hang out with him outside of the Psych context. We spend the majority of our time doing the exact opposite of whatever our characters would do. We’re usually wasted, so we may be just as quick but our speech is more slurred.
D: And there’s less references to the ‘80s.
J: Gotta keep the ‘80s alive!

How often do you get together?
D: The last time I saw him outside of work, it was in New York City. We met at this place and Derek Jeter was sitting in the corner. I was like, “Dude, look who’s over there! He’s like, “Where?” I’m like, “Dude, seriously…” It was like this hard obvious turn with arms swinging and everything. You know better than that, dude!

J: All he had to do was say,”Dude, play it cool!” or “Dude, don’t look now but see who’s sitting over there!” Actors geek out over athletes. Everyone knows that. But I blew our moment with the true mayor of New York City. We weren’t cool anymore.

Have you ever met celebrities who are fans of the show?

J: One of our co-stars, Maggie Lawson, had a moment in an airport years ago when all these kids ran over to her going, “Oh my God! Psych!” Then the dad came over and it was Kenny G. I thought that was pretty appropriate for our show, that he’d be a big fan.

D: He didn’t speak, though. He just made those “Da da do do” noises. I once met Zoe Saladana and she was a big fan. But that was before Avatar. I’m sure she’s too busy now.

J: It always amazes me when I see the people who watch our show, and usually it’s because of their children. Kids love watching adults act like children. It’s that spirit they can relate to. As we’ve gotten older and they’ve gotten older, some of the jokes are landing after flying by them for years.

You do seem to have some pretty passionate fans out there.
D: It’s flattering they’ve stayed engaged for seven seasons now. Those are the Psych-Os. I’ll never forget that fist time we went to Comic-Con. We work in Vancouver, away from the world, and have no idea what’s going on in the rest of the world. So when we got to Comic-Con and saw 4,000 people in the crowd waiting for us, it was overpowering.

So what do you have in store for the fans in Season Seven?
J: They should be on the lookout for the 100th episode, It’s our “Clue” tribute. That one delivers. We’ve got several of the stars from the movie, including Christopher Lloyd, Lesley Ann Warren and Martin Mull. We do it right. We also finally did our musical episode, and that delivers too. I’m not sure if that’ll be part of Season Seven. It ends up being a two-hour special later in the year.

Can you give up any highlights about those episodes?

J: For me, the highlight is just knowing we’re finally doing “Clue” after teasing the idea for two years. I feel like with our fans, we have to be true to our word. If we tell them we’re going to do something, they get excited and hate it if we pull back. We did that for a little while with Clue and a long while with the musical. And with that one, even though it was a little scary, as we were making it we were like, “Oh my gosh! Are we pulling this off? But we said we were going to do it and we did.

D: And yes, we’re really singing in it.

J: We’re not “Glee“-ing it. We all sing. Some better than others.

D: We got the music a couple days before we shot the episode. Then, we flew in to LA for the day to record our vocals and then flew back to film it.

J: We didn’t “Les Miz” it.

What’s in store for your characters?
J: There will the most significant developments ever for Sean and Jules (Lawson). At least since they’ve been together. Fans should look forward to that.

D: There is a wedding this season too.

Between Gus and Sean?
D: You don’t know. Maybe. But personally, I don’t think Gus would want to get that attached to Sean. He worries about his credit score all the time and marrying Sean is a sure way for it to go down.

J: It leaked out there are some nuptials this season. I’ll just say the heat is on to figure out who is tying the knot.

D: Gus does get an ongoing girlfriend this season, played by Parminder Nagra. She makes her way through Season Seven. He’s got a lot of backup tension that this will hopefully help take care of. He can finally express himself, and relax a little.

J: You’ll probably want the kids to steer clear of that.

D: I have really wanted to see Gus stay in some kind of relationship dynamic for more than one episode. Even though it was fun in Season 4 when he fell head over heels with someone different every week.

You seem to have a knack for getting well-known guest stars. Who all is lined up for Season Seven?
D: It was impressive to me that we got three members of the Clue cast on. Just like when we got a lot of the Twin Peaks and Breakfast Club casts to do our tributes to them.

J: This season, we’ve also got recognizable people like Jeffrey Tambor, Tony Plana, WWE Superstar The Big Show, Garcelle Beauvais, Steve Valentine, Garret Morris, Barry Bostwick and Max Gail. Anthony Michael Hall joins us for a few episodes. He changes everything. Let’s just say what he does….it’s big. It’s consequential.

D: We’ve got Barack Obama this year.

J: That’s President Barack Obama.

D: I can’t say too much about it.

J: I will say he’s not playing himself. That’s all we can say at the moment.

You mentioned earlier that you shot your 100th episode. Did you get any special gifts to mark the occasion?
D: I got a great gift. It came in the mail. It’s called a pay check. They said, “This is the 100th gift we’ve given you. Hope you like it.”

J: The city of Vancouver did declare Psych Day for the anniversary. But we had to keep explaining to people who didn’t know that it wasn’t just Random Crazy People day.

The show has a pretty devoted following already, but how would you lure in people who have yet to see a single episode?
J: I’d describe Psych as “Real Genius” meets “Django Unchained.”

D: The “D” is silent. I always tell people it’s about two friends who form a detective agency under the premise that one of them is a psychic, and they the beat cops at their own game.

J: That’s great but I prefer “Real Genius” meets “Django Unchained.”

D: And the “D” is still silent.
